The Quilting Ministry was established in February of 2019 when the parish received a donation of several bins of cotton fabric from the estate of Veta Sturges, a long-time quilter from Amarillo who once knew the Sisters of St. Scholastica when they were in Canyon. Her friend, Ruth Root, made the donation and asked that the fabric be used for charitable items. We later received another large collection of children’s fabrics and batting from two of our long-time quilters at St. Ann’s: Marge McCarty and Georgann Rickwartz.
As our first project Fr. Busch commissioned us to make baptismal quilts for the babies who are baptized at St. Ann’s Parish. He asked only that the quilt had a cross. See our finished project below.
Our other projects we are currently working on include: Lap quilts for wheelchairs and adult bibs for the nursing homes, children’s quilts for Child Protective Services. We have fabric for wheelchair or walker bags as well as baby bibs and will start on those in the near future.
We started with only a handful of ladies who enjoy sewing and sharing the talents God blessed us with. If you are a quilter or are interested in learning, we would love for you to join us. This is a very rewarding ministry, especially when we meet the newly baptized little ones and see the joy in the parent’s faces when they receive this gift from their parish family. Come check us out.
Dear Jesus, help us to spread Your fragrance everywhere we go.
Flood our souls with Your Spirit and Life.
Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly
that our lives may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through us and be so in us
that every soul we come in contact with
may feel Your presence in our souls.
Let them look up, and see no longer us, but only Jesus!
Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as You shine,
so to shine as to be a light to others.
The light, O Jesus, will be all from You; none of it will be ours.
It will be You, shining on others through us.
Let us thus praise You in the way You love best, by shining on those around us.
Let us preach You without preaching, not by words but by example,
by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what we do,
the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear for You. Amen.
